Host OS: Windows XP SP2
Virtual System: VMware 4.0.5
universal, and minimal install 2005.1-r1 CD.
I attempted to install Gentoo via VMWare.
On bootup right after the initializing process identifies
the INIT version( hich was 2.86) There is a panic: segment violation.

>>Booting (initramfs)...........
INIT: version 2.86 booting
INIT: PANIC: segmentation violation at 0x804a013(code)! sleeping for 30 seconds.

We cannot support a commercial product such as VMware, specifically one so old. Please try updating to VMWare 4.5 (at least) and preferably 5.5 (licensing permitting). Upgrading to VMware 4.5 is free from 4.0.5 and uses the same license.
