After starting up my system and I enter the login name (user or root) in the shell environment. I get a list of "Configuration errors - unknown item - '[item]' ". I searched in my files and found every one of the unknown items listed in my /etc/login.defs file. When I commented them out the errors went away. I was told that the items I commented out are suppose to be there and NOT commented out. My question is how do I get my system to recognize these items so that I don't get the configuration errors any more?
This is a list of the configuration errors that I recieve with my linux-2.4.29-gentoo-r5 system These errors started occuring sometime after I emerged the updates. I wasn't aware of the necessity of unmerging the old files. Could that be a cause of these errors Login: Username [Enter] Configuration error - unknown item 'CONSOLE' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'CREATE_HOME' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'DIALUPS_CHECK_ENAB' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'ENVIRON_FILE' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'ENV_HZ' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'ERASECHAR' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'KILLCHAR' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'LOG_OK_LOGINS' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'MAIL_CHECK_ENAB' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'MAIL_DIR' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'NOLOGINS_FILE' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'PORTTIME_CHECKS_ENAB' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'QUOTAS_ENAB' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'SU_NAME' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'SU_WHEEL_ONLY' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'SYSLOG_SG_ENAB' (notify administrator) Configuration error - unknown item 'SYSLOG_SU_ENAB' (notify administrator) Password:
I think I fixed the problem. I wasn't aware of there being a ._cfg0000_login.defs update. I backed the original file up and did the update. Now the error messages don't show up any more. If there is a problem with what I did I would appreciate any corrective action.
