The madwifi project has now recieved code for the atheros chips from atheros. This code has been developed by the madwifi team into a different set of drivers. There are now two sets of drivers for atheros based chips, madwifi and madwifi-ng. Having only the madwifi-driver and madwifi-tools in the tree doesn't make it clear which is being used. There are some major changes in how the devices are created and work. I think with these changes, it is needed to have to packages for each, or at least rename the branch to make it clear. Since both are still going to be maintained, though the old madwifi drivers are only going to receive security fixes and the madwifi-ng will have all the new features added to it, I think both should be in the tree with future plans to remove the madwifi branch
