When starting mplayer, sound initialization fails with this: alsa-init: 1 soundcard found, using: default ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1109:(_snd_pcm_dmix_open) Unknown field ipc_gid alsa-init: playback open error: Invalid argument Could not open/initialize audio device -> no sound. Audio: no sound Removing this line in /usr/share/alsa/pcm/dmix.conf fixes the problem: ipc_gid audio note: the line is present in the default dmix.conf installed with alsa-lib, I didn't modify it
I forgot, the versions are alsa-lib-1.0.10 and mplayer-bin-1.0_pre7-r2
in-kernel drivers or alsa-driver? Which version? [cat /proc/asound/version]. If the version of alsa-lib and driver mismatch, fix that.
alsa-driver, not the in-kernel drivers $ cat /proc/asound/version Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.10. Compiled on Dec 20 2005 for kernel 2.6.14-gentoo-r2.
Please try with latest alsa version using alsa-driver rather than in kernel ones.
