Description Denny Reeh 2005-12-22 10:24:28 UTC
after update of vmware-workstation to version 5.5.1.19175, it don't start anymore. following error:

*** attempt to put segment in horiz list twice

Comment 1 Ray Tsang 2006-01-02 02:41:36 UTC
vmware does not start for me either. i too have installed libglade 2.5.1, however it exited silently w/o error messages.

can vmware-workstation-5.5.0.18463 be reverted in the time being?
Comment 2 Adam King 2006-01-03 06:54:06 UTC
Same here - vmware dies silently. No error message, nothing. 5.5.0 worked ok for me
Comment 3 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-04 13:51:19 UTC
Please post "emerge info" and REOPEN.

vmware-workstation-5.0.0.13124-r5 ebuild was removed, can we please store the old 5.0 and 5.5 ebuilds until this issue is resolved?
Comment 8 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-08 06:42:46 UTC
No.

Both of those ebuilds installed a remotely exploitable version of VMware. I am also completely unable to replicate this bug. What version of libglade do you have installed?

(For those of you that don't know, you can take older ebuilds from viewcvs.gentoo.org and put them in an overlay, just don't expect me to put ebuilds with known security bugs back in the tree just to fix a non-security bug)

Strange - vmware started working again today after doing an 'emerge sync; emerge -auD world'. I also did a 'emerge --unmerge vmware-workstation' followed by 'emerge -a vmware-workstation'. Can't tell you exactly what changed, but 5.5.1 _is_ working for me now.
Comment 12 Ray Tsang 2006-01-10 03:44:50 UTC
I've just did what Adam did in Comment #11, it worked out fine as well.
Comment 13 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2006-01-10 06:18:46 UTC
Very stange...

I have been completely unable to reproduce it. Perhaps a change in libglade? I know that I haven't changed anything in vmware-workstation recently.

So... I say we chalk this one up to gremlins...
Comment 14 Denny Reeh 2006-01-10 11:10:12 UTC
for me it works NOT after remerge it, but after unmerge of libglade it works!! funny.
Comment 15 Denny Reeh 2006-01-14 06:58:13 UTC
problem occurs again.
i've found a workaround in the vmware discussion forums...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

 Hello,

Vmware WS 5.5.1 stopped working after upgrading the following packages:

GTK: from 2.8.6 to 2.8.9
Glib: from 2.8.3 to 2.8.4
Pango: from 1.10.1 to 1.10.2
ATK: from 1.10.3 to 1.10.3 (not upgraded)
Glade: from 2.12.0 to 2.12.0 (not upgraded)
LibGlade: from 2.5.1 to 2.5.1 (not upgraded)

The error message is:
$ vmware
/usr/local/lib/vmware/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libglade-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_return_if_fail_warning

Running vmware with VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force works.

The above upgrade was for upgrading Gnome 2.12.1 to 2.12.2. (Dropline on Slackware-current, other libs were upgraded as well).

At first I suspected this was Dropline's fault (pre-built packages), but I compiled a few GTK+2.4 compatible applications and they run flawlessly. The other GTK+2.4 applications that were built before upgrading the above libs also run with no problems.
Comment 16 Christian Apolloni 2006-01-15 08:09:28 UTC
I had a similar problem and it seems it's triggered by gtk+2.8.9 and greater. Vmware fails to start with the following error:

/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2: undefined symbol: FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden

Downgrading gtk+ to version 2.8.8, vmware starts without problem.

I tried to dowgrande freetype and recompile cairo to avoid the FT_GlyphSlot_Embolden symbol, but then I got this error when starting vmware:

/opt/vmware/workstation/lib/bin/vmware: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libpangocairo-1.0.so.0: undefined symbol: pango_font_get_font_map

Again, downgrading to gtk+2.8.8, vmware starts.
Comment 17 Rick Harris 2006-02-09 04:48:50 UTC
There appears to be three bugs in this post.

The first is the libglade error, the second being gtk error, the third being the dying silently/not starting with no errors.

Mine is the latter dying silently type.

Not a clue what is causing it, does not even show any errors in an strace, but here's a few notes.

My wife's PC (also Gentoo) runs this Vmware version without any problems.

Preliminary comparison of her system against mine gives the following...

The version of libglade installed does not matter (we both have 2.5.1 installed)

The version of gtk+ installed does not matter (mine is 2.8.8, hers is 2.8.11)

I'll try to get to the bottom of at least the 3rd bug, but it may well be the case that a new Vmware version is released before any of this is solved.
Comment 18 Rick Harris 2006-02-13 15:32:12 UTC
Found the solution to the bug where vmware on startup exits with no apparent errors.

After finding that vmware logs everything to /tmp/vmware-* it became apparent that it was barfing on a missing hal library.

Re-emerging/updating hal, `/etc/init.d/hald start` & vmware now starts again.
Comment 19 gunix 2006-02-14 11:08:01 UTC
It didn't work for me.

Calculating dependencies ...done!

Now you can remove -p (or --pretend) from arguments and re-run revdep-rebuild.

I have the same problem.

I tried "VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK=force vmware" in the console line, which works for me.

I then get the following in /tmp/vmware-Kevin/ui-7380.log:

----

However, when I just "vmware" the console gives me the following error:

Can you test the new 5.5.2 ebuild? It is currently masked due to it requiring vmware-modules-1.0.0.15 (which pulls down the vmware server sources) but otherwise is perfectly good to be used.
