I am installing install-sparc64-universal-2005.1.iso from CD on a SunBlade 1000 with OpenBoot 4.5. After "boot cdrom", SILO starts, and I try entering "gentoo-2.4" at the prompt: Rebooting with command: boot cdrom Boot device: /pci@8,700000/scsi@6/disk@6,0:f File and args: SILO // Welcome to Gentoo SPARC Linux // // Version 2005.1 // boot: gentoo-2.4 Loading initial ramdisk.... Fast Data Access MMU Miss {0} ok This error message occurs everytime, on two different SunBlade 1000 machines. I currently have Solaris 9 and 10 running on these two machines. I have read the old bug reports about SILO incompatabilities, with the ensuing fixes reportedly being incorporated into pre-2005.1 releases (i.e., <http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=25892>). Were the previously reported SILO problems fixed in 2005 releases? Should I try installing using one of the earlier 2004 releases? Thanks, Tim
I should note the the version of OpenBoot I was using was 4.5.21. I have now updated to 4.16.4. Now, the error message is as follows: boot: gentoo-2.4 Loading initial ramdisk.... ERROR: /packages/deblocker: Last Trap: Fast Data Access MMU Miss And, then it hangs forever.
Yes, basically the silo issues were pre-2005.0. Some devels (weeve, jforman) are using gentoo fine on sb1000 machines, but i dunno which OBP versions they have. Also sometimes having memory in the wrong slots can cause this, even if it does work in solaris (say filling bank 2 before bank 1 and such).
Can you please check this against the 2006.0 CD?
(In reply to comment #3) > Can you please check this against the 2006.0 CD? > Sorry for the delay in trying this out. Looks like the same problems and error messages with 2006.0.
Would you be willing to test this with our 2006.1 pre-release materials?
SPARC: Isn't this one of the things we've fixed?
Very likely, up to 2006.0 we shipped with 2.4 and older silo versions.
OK. We're going to assume that this is FIXED, but since we never got a response, I'm marking it as NEEDINFO.
