Description Marti Raudsepp 2005-12-21 09:48:12 UTC
XMPP (Jabber) addresses should also be hidden if the user chooses to hide his/her e-mail address. Since Jabber addresses are in the same format as e-mail addresses, it makes them easy target for e-mail address spiders. This is probably also relevant for the MSN Messenger addresses.

Relevant discussion on #gentoo-forums follows:
<tomk> should be easy to do, but I'd do it the smae way the emails are done
<tomk> i.e. if you set your email address to be public then show the jabber address even when not logged in
<tomk> I'm assuming that if you don't mind random people emailing you, then you won't mind them jabbering with you
<intgr> Well, I wouldn't mind legitimate forum users from PMing.
<intgr> I'm just worried about ending up in a spam mailing list.
<nixnut> they can always pm you trough the forum, you can exchange jabber id later if you want
<intgr> nixnut: The point of having an IM address in the profile is so that you can quickly get in contact with the person.
<intgr> Right?
<nixnut> well, your choice
<amne> maybe for email 3 levels would make sense: show always // show to logged in users // don't show at all
<amne> the third option makes of course no sense for jabber/MSN, unless you want only admins allowed to see it ;-)

An e-mail address is required for registration and 'interaction' with some optional forum features. Since the Jabber address isn't required, it makes more sense to me if the user just didn't list one if they wanted it hidden... why put in a Jabber address if you don't want anyone to see it?

Perhaps a better alternative would be to only show the Jabber info to logged in users.

The whole point of this idea was that I *do* want legitimate users to see this information, but to prevent it from getting stuck in spamlist spiders, for example.

Right. And to do that, it should be visible to all users logged in. If it's an option like e-mail, which is 'show to all' or 'hide from all non-moderators/admins', then nobody would see it, defeating the purpose.

My proposal would be to hide all contact info except from users that are logged in.

All profile data is now hidden unless you're logged in.
