A workaround is the same as in <a href="http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=105183"><a/>. (It is open since Sept. 2005...) Try USE="-doc" emerge evolution-data-server The rest of requirements for gaim and gaim itself compile without problem with "doc".

it seems evolution wants esound. Is it installed on your system ? Could you reproduce this with lastest stable eds ? or with latest unstable ?
this version is out of the tree and there is no input from reporters for some months. Suggest to close this bug until more input is reported.
