The only thing that came into my mind was, that I updated to gcc 3.4.4 - but I did not switch yet with gcc-config and did not recompile system & world (or did revdep-rebuild), because I need my Laptop at the 22c3 :)
I also emerged other packages which worked fine, so I don't think that it could be the cause.

Try with -mcpu=i586 (or with 3.4.4), please...
