Description Jukka Palko 2005-12-18 09:35:27 UTC
The vdr-subtitles plugin is available at
http://virtanen.org/vdr/subtitles/
and it needs the patch
vdr-1.3.37-subtitles-0.3.8-and-ttxtsubs-0.0.5.diff.gz
from
http://users.tkk.fi/~rahrenbe/vdr/

The catch with the patch is however that, as far as I know, it isn't compatible with Elchi nor AIO patches. The vdr ebuild must take into account this with use flags.

The version 1.3.24 in the german gentoo-de portage tree took this into account, but now that a newer version has popped up in normal portage tree, it would be nice to have also support in the new versions provided of vdr.

This will be taken into account, but not too soon.
In the mean time you can use this feature described in the vdr-wiki:

Thanks, will do that way the patch adding and then compile the plugin.

It's just that a lot of European channels need this particular patch and plugin for text.

By the way, after having updated stuff yesterday, about all the media-video stuff, icluding vdr gives me this:
Failed cache update: media-video/vdr-1.3.36 object does not support item assignment

@Jukka:
subtitles-support for vdr was just added this week to the (up to now masked) ebuild vdr-1.3.36-r3. It is controlled by the useflag "subtitles".

Could you check wheather this works, and report it here.

Just synced portage and seems masked still (/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask):
# Matthias Schwarzott <zzam@gentoo.org> (23 Jan 2006)
# Masked until new patch system prooves to be working
=media-video/vdr-1.3.36-r3

Yeah, I wrote that it was masked, you could have tested it by adding
"=media-video/vdr-1.3.36-r3" to /etc/portage/package.unmask.

A few minutes ago I finally unmasked vdr-1.3.36-r3. Would you be so kind and check if it works now out of the box without changes by hand.

PS: On which channels dvb-subtitles are broadcasted, for checking it myself?

Unfortunately I don't have access to my brothers VDR setup remotely as that has a lot of European channels via satellite that seem to have needed the subtitles plugin, but Pekka Virtanen mentions on his web page that "DVB subtitles are known to be used on Finnish and British free-to-view channels." I won't be visiting my brother in at least a month or two, as my wife is on her last months of pregnancy and it's a long drive there.

And sorry, I misunderstood your meaning on masking, thought you meant it had been fully unmasked or just ~x86 masked.

Slight problems with this version as my lircd just wouldn't work with it. I remasked the 1.3.36-r3 and recompiled back vdr-1.3.36-r1 and it worked just fine. I do not have the rcu use flag set on my system and looked like it had been dropped in 1.3.36-r3, please put it back. :)

closed, as it works fine here

Sorry, didn't notice that IR_CTL addition in /etc/conf.d/vdr earlier. Works great for me too.
