emerging gnome-panel stops half way through with no error messages (not even
from portage)

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge gnome-panel

Actual Results:  
emerge dies with no error message

Expected Results:  
package is merged

gnome-panel-2.12.2 seems to have fixed the problem (no thanks to anyone actually trying to help fix it)
