The surround40 alias has the front channels muted with alsa-lib-1.0.10 (also rc2 and rc3) and in-kernel drivers from gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r2 (I obtain the same results with surround51 ). Upgrading alsa-driver to 1.0.10 solved the problem (it added the "Front" voice in alsamixer ;) ).
