After upgrading to x11-libs/gtk+-2.8.8 and x11-themes/gtk-engines-2.6.6, the 
Crux theme no longer works. Bunch of these messages appear when trying to use 
it:

(gtk-chtheme:7167): Gtk-WARNING **: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.4.0/engines/libcrux-
engine.so: undefined symbol: uninstall_all_focus_hooks

Downgrading gtk-engines to 2.6.5 fixed Crux theme.

bumping to 2.7.0 also resolves the problem

I can confirm that 2.7.0 works (renamed 2.6.6 ebuild).

Marked as a bug in gtk-engine source code (fixed):

thanks, this was put into the 2.6.7 release which will be going stable soon.
