Spanky what version of binutils are you using exactly, you have so many installed. Also if you would set 2.16.1 and try again.
i use 2.16.1 most of the time (and is what i am hitting this bug with)
I have the same problem. I don't know whether it matters, but I have gcc-4.0.2-r2 installed (but not selected with gcc-config). For fun, I'm retrying the build using gcc-4.0.2-r2. It is not compiler related. It is some wierdness I have not yet figured out. A second emerge seems to fix it tho, so making it tough to figure out exact problem.
Hmm... Then I guess the fact that it built fine when I retried it with gcc4 isn't news. Oddly, this build seems convinced that it's Deer Park Alpha 2 (although About says "Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051201 Firefox/1.5), so it appears to be the right version.

hmm, and now 1.5-r2 failed on me ... guess it's magic in the air ;)
After I installed new hard drive and had to remerge everything I received same error message. I had set MAKEOPTS="-j2" on the new install; I had a backup of my old /etc folder and checked that, and didn't have MAKEOPTS set at all. Commented out that line, and mozilla-firefox-1.5-r3 installed. I am having the same problem now with mozilla-firefox-1.5-r4. -r3 was fine, as were previous versions, although they all claim to be Deer Park Alpha's. Re-emerging again doesn't seem to work this time.

for everyone that is having this flux set makeopts="-j1" and test I do not want to have to force it in the tree until I am sure it is an issue. Also this is far from always reproducable I have yet been able to duplicate the error.
MAKEOPTS="-j1" fixed it for me.
I can also confirm that the build error happened for me too and that MAKEOPTS="-j1" fixed it.
I got the error with 1.5-r9 on x86 but it is not reproducible.
I can confirm that MAKEOPTS="-j1" solved it for me, too.
I found out that the cause of the problem is that the "expat" module has to be built before the "htmlbrowser" module, which is not always the case with -j2. I don't know how to fix this "the right way", but this patch does the job: --- mozilla/Makefile.in~ 2005-08-24 20:26:56.000000000 +0200 +++ mozilla/Makefile.in 2006-01-14 23:18:10.738252750 +0100 @@ -58,6 +58,7 @@ $(MAKE) -C config export $(MAKE) nspr $(MAKE) ldap + $(MAKE) -C parser/expat $(MAKE) tier_0 $(MAKE) tier_1 $(MAKE) tier_2

Setting MAKEOPTS="-j1" solved problem.
well, I tried once again, doing notning except emerge --sync and this time almost everyting went fine (last time: see bug 119530). Only errors were: /usr/libexec/mozilla-launcher: line 648: regchrome: command not found E: regchrome exited with status: 127 E: //usr/lib/mozilla-firefox/extensions/installed-extensions.txt still present E: Registration might have gone wrong but ff got compiled successfully.

Ignore the regchrome you are only seeing it due to firefox-1.0.x being uninstalled.
Alright the next version is in my overlay I am gonna get it added to the tree tomorrow with a p.mask. It is gonna need testing, I do not suggest ya test if your worried about any breakage right now as you will need to unmask nss/nspr as well. What is in the overlay is not what will end up in tree for officially, nss/nspr deps are gonna be placed in ebuild along with option to build against nss/nspr mozcoreconf will remove --without-system-nspr as well and it will be moved into -r9 for firefox and 1.5 thunderbird.
Fixed in -r11 and 1.5.0.1 We will be moving to 1.5.0.1 in the next few days as it contains all the security fixes, so look for stable rather fast.
