MB:ASRock 939NF4G-SATA2 pcu: AMD Athlon64 2800 LiveCD: install-minimal 2005.1 downloaded 26 Nov 2005 SATA HDD Vendor: ATA Model: Maxtor 6L200M0 Rev: BACE CD opens usual dialog. gentoo -- hangs gentoo-nofb -- hangs at sata_nv gentoo-nofb noload=sata_nv -- gives kernel panic while coldplugging pci Presumably hardware incompatibility??. I removed ATI X700Super pci-e graphics card, but same happens. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.insert CD install-amd64-minimal-2005.1 and boot 2.enter 'gentoo-nofb' 3. Actual Results: hangs at sata-nv or kernel panics if 'noload=sata_nv' option. Expected Results: system should load and give root prompt.
...and if you use gentoo noload=sata_nv nohotplug?

But I assume from the fact that Debian on the same box loads sata_nv that I would then be left without a hard drive. If I get a moment, I'll try to test, but for now I'm leaving the box with Debian (after replacing the ATI card with an Nvidia).
Can you try out the ISO at: http://gentoo.osuosl.org/experimental/amd64/livecd/install-amd64-universal-2005-12-11.iso I'm wondering if it works. I bet it does since it is using a newer kernel. All you really need to do is boot test it, so we won't force you to switch from Debian (yet... :P)
(In reply to comment #3) > Can you try out the ISO At the moment, I cannot, as the AMD64 cpu and m/bd are dismantled. But I'll try to find a moment (and cash for a h.d.d. and memory) to reassemble it soon and give that a run. ... > we won't force you to switch from Debian (yet... :P) As to that, I am not yet convinced -- some things just don't seem to work as well in Gentoo -- I expect I have a bit to learn still...
I also have this bug (similar hardware), and was unable to install gentoo because of it. Would this make the severity greater than normal?
Not really... it only affects people with a certain hardware set, making it pretty much "normal" as it doesn't affect *everyone*... besides that, we'll have a new kernel for 2006.0, so the problems here are unlikely... have you tried the alternate install methods (like using a Knoppix/Debian CD)? Otherwise, I would say to try to stay in touch with the AMD64 architecture team to assist in testing 2006.0, which we are in the process of working on now...
there is an experemental livecd on the mirrors at /experimental/amd64/livecd/install-amd64-universal-2005-12-11.iso which has a .14 kernel. Make sure to download a stage seperatly from the mirrors, the one on the livecd has a known distcc bug. Many users who have had problems with 2005.1{,-r1} livecd regarding nvidia chipsets have had luck with this one.
This is fixed in 2006.0!
