udev is driving me nuts!!!!!! %-/ I'm watching this problem for weeks now... searched the forum read the bug-reports but I found nothing that helped me or gave me a good direction to further investigate... Reemerging udev also doesn't change anything. Also, I don't have changed any single byte of the system's /etc/udev configuration files so far My assumptions: 1. "vc" are the virtual consoles(??!!) does this problem has something to do with the running "screen"? or 2. the system-console is redirected to a serial console (grub.conf) does this perhabs has something to do with virtuell consoles? see cut-out from my grub.conf: # Boot automatically after 30 secs. # configure COM 1 for serial console support: serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 # Specify both types of terminals and wait until # a key is pressed or <timeout> seconds are over terminal --timeout=10 serial console title=Gentoo Linux 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 (tty0 Console) root (hd0,0) kernel /kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.13-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/hda3 udev splash=verbose, theme:emergence video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap,1024x768-32@85 initrd /initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.13-gentoo-r5 . . . "udevsend vc" processes is far toooo high resulting eg. in very slow ssh-handshakes. I tried to collect/present some useful information for you: let me know whether I have forgotton something udev-special: the output of "ps -ef" presents hundreds(!!!) of "udevsend vc" processes like these: root 31353 4 0 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/udevsend vc root 31356 4 0 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/udevsend vc root 31357 4 0 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/udevsend vc root 31358 4 0 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/udevsend vc root 31359 4 0 15:18 ? 00:00:00 /sbin/udevsend vc the same for the unix DGRAM sockets: riviera grub # netstat -nap | grep udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092900 8147/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092864 8126/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092863 8125/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092862 8124/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092860 8123/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092856 8122/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092855 8121/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092854 8120/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092852 8119/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092848 8118/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092847 8117/udevsend unix 3 [ ] DGRAM 12092846 8116/udevsend The highest count I've seen so far was between 800 to 1000 for processes and DGRAM sockets, too. Now in the moment (uptime 6 day) there are between 600 - 800 of them variing over time. Manually invoking "ps -ef" (using bash-history) with around 0.5 sec. pause between the calls it shows the variance: it decreases by some processes than it amount of processes rises again: e.g. after around _2 days_ uptime: it de- and increases around 50 (between _2-50_ udevsend processes) e.g. after around _6 days_ uptime: it de- and increases around 50 (between _800-750_ udevsend processes) A small "cut-out" (approx. 5 sec) of such an "ps -ef | grep udevsend | wc -l" session: riviera grub # netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 733 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 750 746 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 788 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 787 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 784 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 790 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 789 785 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 787 783 riviera grub # ps -ef | grep udev|wc -l && netstat -nap | grep udevsend | wc -l 786 782 riviera grub # Hardware details on my system: CPU: Intel PIII Copermine Board: Asus CUSL2 (Intel 815 chipset) RAM: 512MB lspci: riviera ~ # lspci 0000:00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82815 815 Chipset Host Bridge and Memory Controller Hub (rev 02) 0000:00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82815 CGC [Chipset Graphics Controller] (rev 02) 0000:00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 01) 0000:00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801BA ISA Bridge (LPC) (rev 01) 0000:00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801BA IDE U100 (rev 01) 0000:00:1f.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #1) (rev 01) 0000:00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM SMBus (rev 01) 0000:00:1f.4 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801BA/BAM USB (Hub #2) (rev 01) 0000:01:09.0 Multimedia controller: Philips Semiconductors SAA7146 (rev 01) 0000:01:0a.0 Serial controller: Timedia Technology Co Ltd PCI2S550 (Dual 16550 UART) (rev 01) 0000:01:0b.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB Live! If so, please tell me which sections. Could this problem be caused by some strange BIOS settings??? There is no external PCI/AGP-graphic-contr. present (the system uses the chip-internal i810-AGP-Graphic-Controler)??? Could my "strange" PCI-Card-Mix cause the problems? (1 DVB-Card, 2 ISDN cards (AVM+HFC), 1 4-Port "sundance" ethernet-card, 1 dual UART 16650-RS232-Controller)??? Should I emerge ~x86-udev?! But keep in mind: The server is 400miles away from me, I don't want to risk a journey, because of failures in udev, causing the machine not to come up properly... ;-) Should I upgrade to gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r2? But: the previous update from gentoo-sources-2.6.12-r10 to gentoo-sources-2.6.13-r5 did not change anything...) Should I use a vanilla kernel instead of gentoo's own? Sorry for the very long bug-description but I don't no exactly which kind of information would be helpfull. Please tell me what's missing and I provide this informations, too. I would be very glad if you could give me a hint where to search for my or udev's or the system's error! Many thanks in advance! regards Daniel Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: rebooting waiting (nearly idle, sending 10-20 emails and max. 2 current ssh-sessions), around 2-3 days... Actual Results: load average: 2.51, 2.25, 2.16 hundreds of "udevsend vc" processes Expected Results: not hundreds of "udevsend vc" or at least all hundreds should disapear again?
I think I've found the error cause: imho it's "METALOG's console-logging" I use metalog (for syslog) and activated it's console-logging, using the following (shipped by the metalog ebuild) consolelog.sh shell script: #!/bin/sh # # consolelog.sh # For metalog -- log to a console # # Taken from LFS! :-/ # console="" for d in /dev/vc/10 /dev/tty10 /dev/console ; do if [ -e ${d} ] ; then console=${d} break fi done if [ -z "${console}" ] ; then exit 1 fi echo "$1 [$2] $3" > ${console} This script is called whenever the syslog-ouput should be send to a console. During boot-up the consolelog.sh will be started. Every output line is processed by the consolelog.sh and for each line "/dev/vc/10 /dev/console" is checked for existence... I think this in conjunction with udev's device-creation could cause the above described problems?! So, I deactivated the console-logging /etc/metalog/metalog.conf and restarted the machine 10 minutes ago. I will verify this (hopefully) problem solution the next days. If deactivating metalog's consolelog.sh solved my problem, I'll try to get console logging enabled again but with a custom methode/script... Cheers Daniel Another possibility would be to unemerge metalog and use standard syslogd.
(In reply to comment #1) > I think I've found the error cause: imho it's "METALOG's console-logging" > After watching my process table and system-load for a day I can for sure say: That was it! So this bug was no udev-bug and thus can be closed. Or should it be assigned to "metalog", because metalog's consolelog.sh drove my udev-based system (and also me) completly nuts! ;-)
metalog 8.0_rc1-r2 should address this
