I can confirm this as well (on amd64, if that matters/helps). "emerge info" output is below. FYI: I was still able to get the kernel to compile, but I'm having strange kernel problems upon rebooting. I'm holding off on any further debugging of this kernel until this first issue is resolved. ---------- Portage 2.0.51.22-r3 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.13-gentoo-r5 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3200+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib64/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon64 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.osuosl.org http://gentoo.ccccom.com http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.namerica.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X aalib acpi alsa arts audiofile avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts browserplugin bzip2 cdparanoia cdr crypt cups curl divx4linux doc dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd exif expat fam flac foomaticdb fortran ftp gd gif glut gmp gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 icq idn imap imlib ipv6 jabber java jce joystick jpeg junit kde kerberos lcms ldap libwww lzo lzw lzw-tiff mad mng motif mozdevelop mozilla mp3 mpeg nas ncurses nls nntp nptl nvidia ogg oggvorbis opengl oscar oss pam pcre pda pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline real samba sasl scanner sdl sftplogging spell ssl tcpd theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts udev usb userlocales vorbis xml xml2 xmms xpm xv xvid yahoo zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS
You can safely ignore this message for now. It is harmless and will not affect the stability of your kernel.
FYI this message also appears when merging sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.14-r5.

where does this call to awk even come from?, it isnt directly form kernel-2. :) Will look into this after the move.

Able to reproduce in gentoo-sources-2.6.15

This looks pretty similar to what I get for gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1 since 6 Feb 06. I also got it on 2.6.14-r4 & r5. All have failed to emerge. awk: cmd. line:1: fatal: cannot open file `/usr/tmp/portage/gentoo-sources-2.6.15-r1/work/linux-2.6.15-gentoo-r1/include/linux/version.h' for reading (No such file or directory)
this should now be fixed in CVS.

Apparently unfixed. Can someone >/dev/null the darned message so that people stop reporting non-issues?
Last I heard it was not clear which command is producing the error
this has now been fixed, its caused by the make mrproper scripts which expect a version.h to exist (incorrectly?) Regardless, even though this issue is purely cosmetic, it is not a non-issue.
