Description Wiktor Wandachowicz 2005-11-20 05:18:23 UTC
I'm in the process of installing amd64 Gentoo and this is my third request
today regarding the Handbook. So, here it goes ;-)

In the Handbook, chapter 9, there is a following statement:

----- QUOTE BEGIN -----
9.b. System Logger

When we mentioned what stage3 was, we said that it contained all necessary
system tools for which we cannot provide a choice to our users. We also said
that we would install the other tools later on. Well, here we are :)
----- QUOTE END -----

Actually, there is _no_ previous mention that "stage3 contains all necessary
system tools for which there is no other choice".

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Check the URL that demonstrates the problem
2. Check the "one-page" Handbook:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1

  and search for the following words:
  * stage3
  * choice
  * tools
  * tool

Actual Results:
The phrase I'm referring to can only be found in chapter 9, section b.

Expected Results:
Either the referred phrase should be changed, or alternatively the description
of stage3 tarball should be enhanced (probably in chapter 2, section b. "The
Gentoo Installation CDs", subsection "The Stage3 Tarball").

I understand that the change in Handbook that created this situation is related
to the removal of stage1/stage2 descriptions and installation instructions.
However, stating in the Handbook that something was previously said, while
in fact it wasn't, is a bit inconsequent.

Yes, another one of those "cosmetic changes"...
I know I could do more easily ;-)

But these are the things that a former Gentoo user catches quickly when
(re)installing the system. While others probably wouldn't care. (?)

Anyway, thanks for reading.
