I executed an "emerge rsync", then "emerge gtk-themes", which failed.  Emerge  
died with the error "!!! Couldn't download gtk-engines-mist_0.8.orig.tar.gz.  
Aborting.".  The ebuild attempts to download this package from ibilio.org, and 
then from ftp.debian.org, but both sites return 404 errors.    
  
The file IS on ftp.debian.org, but it is named "gtk-mist-engine".  I couldn't  
find it under any name in the gentoo section on ibiblio.org.

I'm going out of town for the Thanksgiving weekend, so I won't have my computer 
to test fixes until Monday.  Sorry!  :-/

The tarball has hit the ibiblio mirror now, but just for the sake of it, could
you sync your tree and try this?

  # DEBUG="yes" GENTOO_MIRRORS="" emerge gtk-engines-mist
