Description Richard 2005-11-18 09:20:25 UTC
If I use the vesafb frame buffer (to get high resolution console windows) AND
then run startx (I am using nvidia-kernel-1.0.7676-r1) XWindows comes up and
works fine. However if I exit out of Xwindows and then try to startx a second
or subsequent time, XWindows does NOT come up. I can not successfully startx
again until I reboot the system.

Note: This was not an issue when using nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174 and earlier.
If I do not use the vesafb then I can start XWindows multiple times.
With vesafb xdm won't start XWindows even once.
I have tried 'modprobe -r nvidia' but still can't get Xwindows to start
         a second time.
I have tried 'rm /dev/nvidia*' and re-creating the nvidia devices but
still, no Xwindows a 2nd time without reboot.

A seperate attachment will contain the output to /usr/bin/nvidia-bug-report.sh
will be added.

I am running an AMD64 system with a nvidia pci-express card:
Model: GeForce 6800 Series GPU
IRQ: 16
Video BIOS: 05.40.02.15.05
Card Type: PCI-E

Here is the output when trying to start Xwindows the second time:

$ startx

Output to /usr/bin/nvidia-bug-report.sh

I am using vanilla-sources (not Gentoo) kernel. The extra '-rr01' at the end
is just my method for tracking the same kernel with different compile
configurations.

Re-assigning to x11-drivers, since that seems to be the culprit. However,
trying to start X without using 'startx' (I've never tried, probably not nice)
would tell us if it's startx's fault for some weird reason.

I'm not too sure if there's much that can be done about this by us. This sounds
like nVidia's problem. I recommend filing a bug there, however that's done.

Version no longer in the tree, reopen if you can reproduce w/ uptodate x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers. Thanks.
