when booting livecd on an ibm server (tested with netfinity 5000, netfinity 5500 and xseries 330), the system will be automatically resetted after displaying login message w/o any error message printed to screen. gentoo installation works great using a bootcd of another linux distribution, the installed system is rock-stable too. regards, matt
Try http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/ (the "basic" one) and see if this still happens.
yes, this happens with livecd-basic-x86-2002120900.iso too. the system will be resetted after scanning for aic7xxx_old. (i could only test on a netfinity 5500, the others are productional now)
This makes me want to remove aic7xxx_old support from our livecd. Thank you very much for this valuable information, and I will get it fixed for our next "experimental" livecd.
oops.
There is a new liveCD at http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/ (the "2002121600" version) that has aic7xxx_old removed from auto-detection and should resolve this issue. Please post your experiences with this CD (good or bad) here.
the "2002121600" version has this problem too :( the livecd boots up properly, but about 3-5 seconds after the login prompt appears the system will be automatically resetted (tested on a netfinity 5500). I could manage to login, but had no chance to issue any commands or look at the logs :(
bummer. Not sure what to do on this one, as I don't have any relevant IBM hardware for testing.
Does this system have a PERC or MegaRaid controller?
no. all tested systems have an IBM ServeRAID controller (AFAIK 2 and 4Lx)
OK. The ips.c (serveraid) driver in our 2.4.19-based kernel is version 4.90.11. The most recent version from IBM is 5.11. 5.11 in particular includes the following bug fix: (from ftp://ftp.pc.ibm.com/pub/pccbbs/pc_servers/73p6417.txt) o Fixed an intermittent system hang which can occur during a PCI bus scan when a ServeRAID 4M, 4L, 4Mx, or 4Lx is installed in slots 4, 5, and/or 6 of the x345 system. This appears to be a 2.4.19 kernel issue with the 4.90.11 driver. I noticed that 2.4.20_pre2 and 3 contained some ips.c updates. I'll follow up with more information, but I'd like the following information from you. When you have the system installed and everything is running perfectly, what kernel are you using (specific version, with rev?) And please attach your kernel config to this bug report. Thanks :)
OK, 2.4.20 has the 5.00.01 driver.
Created attachment 6688 [details] kernel config 2.4.19-gentoo-r9 (xseries 330)
both running systems (xseries 330 and netfinity 5500) have the 2.4.19-gentoo-r9 kernel revision. i've attached you the kernel configuration of the xseries 330 box. thanks too :)

Matthias: Have you tried one of our kernels based on Linux 2.4.20-vanilla yet? I'd like to know if there's a need to watch out for updates of some device drivers which actually didn't make it into 2.4.20. :) Regards, Tobias
If you have some time, you might want to grab the "2002122300" version of our livecd, which is now based on 2.4.20 and has updated ServeRAID drivers. Post results (good/bad) here.
Matthias, from your /proc information, it looks like our LiveCD kernel (which is based on mainline) trails the gentoo kernel (which is based on -ac). So it appears that this issue may be addressed in the new livecd with 2.4.20 on it, although we are still in need of a test to verify this.
I have a netfinity 5000 to play with. Will get started on testing tomorrow Henti Smith
please test latest livecds
This bug is ancient. No duplicates were reported, so I think it's safe to say it's been solved, but I can't be sure. Closing as TEST-REQUEST.
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
