This is Bug 4230 refiled for the 1.4rc1 version of the install-cd. Sorry for the duplicate, but the problem still exists. The machine in question is an all SCSI system (specs follow at the bottom of the message), IDE controllers are turned off. I have no problem booting other cds on this system. During boot the SCSI detection finds my devices and gives the following message: A BOOTABLE CD-ROM IS DETECTED IN YOUR CD-ROM DRIVE... The boot sections on your bootable CD-ROM are: 0. DEFAULT ENTRY then a message saying something about SCSI setup successfully then it continues to boot from the HARDDISK... It doesn't matter if I set first, second and third boot-device to cdrom in bios or if I leave them as my default as floppy, cdrom, scsi. My workaround was to unplug the scsi-data-cable from the harddisks during scsi-controller biosdetection of the devices. When all other devices were found the system booted from the cd's without problems. When I hotplugged the disks in (I know that this is dangerous) after gentoo started to load, gentoo found the disks and everything went fine. I have a adaptec 2940u2 in that system (which is Athlon based, both the same as the guy who filed 4230). I'll try following controllers as soon as I find some time: Adaptec 2940UW Adaptec 2940U2 (OEM) Adaptec 2940U2W Adaptec 29160 I can test following controllers, too, if you think that would help: Adaptec 2940 Adaptec 2940U I would happily provided any informations about my system and would test images if you see the need.
bull server express5800 ls2400 with aha-2940uw and 1.34.3 works fine 2x seagate 9,1 gb 2x toshiba xm-6201ta 1x jaz 2gb boots from cd, even if there's a OS on the harddisk
bootorder has to bee: floppy, cdrom, harddisk or removeable media first cause bootcd is seen as floppy !!
Doesn't work with: - "floppy, cdrom, scsi" - "cdrom, floppy, scsi" - "cdrom, cdrom, cdrom" - "floppy, floppy, floppy" - "scsi, scsi, scsi" For me, that means, that this isn't a boot- order-issue since that other guy had it with the same controller, too. IMO to boot from cdrom, cdrom has to be first, in order to load the floppy- or hd-image and start elTorito floppy emulation. My Controller shows up on boot with: Adaptec AHA-2940U2 OEM SCSI BIOS v2.11.0 (c) 1998 Adaptec, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Due to the OEM-state of that controller, I'm not able to get *ANY* support from them, not even a new BIOS.
is this onboard controller ? which cdrom do you use ?
Complete Device-listing from dmesg at the bottom. Gentoo-cd is detected in all three drives, but boots in none of them. Windows2000-CD boots in all three drives. The controller is *NOT* onboard :-)
try a bios update
there's no Adaptec 2940U2 at the adaptec homepage please write me, whats written on your controller card
Created attachment 6253 [details] Picture of the Controller Adaptec AHA-2940U2 This is a picture of the Adaptec OEM Controller AHA-2940U2. With this Controller I can boot from CD (like the Windows 2000 CD) but the Gentoo(UT)1.4rc1-cd won't boot.
Created attachment 6254 [details] Picture of the Controller Adaptec AHA-2940U2W This is a picture of the Adaptec Controller AHA-2940U2W. Same effect as with 2940U2. Note that the 2940u2 has a 50Pin connector for external devices, and this controller has a 68Pin LVD connector. With this Controller I can boot from CD (like the Windows 2000 CD) but the Gentoo(UT)1.4rc1-cd won't boot.
I just tested the other Controller, which is a normal (not OEM) Adaptec 2940U2W. Same problem. This controller shows up during boot with: Adaptec AHA-2940U2W SCSI BIOS v2.01.0 (c) 1998 Adaptec, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Should I test some other controllers? I have 29160 and 2940UW available, too... I'm trying to get BIOS-updates both for the SCSI-Controllers and my Mainboard.
I just updated the BIOS on my Gigabyte GA7ZXR Mainboard to version FBB. No change, problem still exists.
Hi Timo, Sorry for the long delay in tackling this bug. I am trying to now catch up on all my old bugs. Please try the latest "livecd-basic" from http://www.gentoo.org/dyn/experimental/livecd/ and see what happens. This new CD is using isolinux 2.0 (latest version). If you still have issues with this new CD, then we should really send this bug upstream to the isolinux guys for assistance, or possibly look into adding some kind of "Memdisk" tweak to the boot process.
I tested livecd-basic-x86-2002121700.iso. The disk is detected as bootable, but I get my standard grub screen, so it seems that doesn't work for me.
please try to update the 2940u2w 06/08/00 AHA-2940U2W Flash BIOS v2.57.2 BIOS version 2.57.2 for the AHA-2940U2W only http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html? sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/AHA-2940U2W
I flashed my OEM 2940u2 with that 2.57.2 bios, and it still works as before. including that it doesn't boot gentoo-cd. I tested livecd-basic-x86-2002122300.iso
Perpahs not exactly the same problem, but I have an old PPro system with TWO Adaptech SCSI cards in it - one 3940U2 and one 2940U. Disks hang of the 3940 and HP DAT tape drive and a CDROM hang off the 2940. The system boots from the CD and I get the initial Gentoo screen. I hit enter to continue. It briefly prints the normal loading and initrd lines, then clears the screen and hangs with the cursor in the upper left corner. I have another system that's exactly the same (same motherboard, bios etc), except for that it uses all IDE devices. There are no problems with that system, just with the SCSI system. I've been running Red Hat Linux on both systems in the past.
Forgot to mention that I try this with the 1.4rc3 CD.
I have an adaptec 2940U2/U2W scsi card in my Macintosh G3 400. I can boot from the livecd for ppc fine, but it doesn't find my scsi hard drive. I do the modprobe and it says that it can't find any modules. Is it a problem with my mac? Or is it a bug in gentoo? Sorry if this has been posted before, but I think it's different than the others on the bug because I'm not using a windows machine.
I'm actually using SysRescCd, which claims to be GENTOO-derived. Seeing same thing with IBM PC-320 in all-SCSI configuration, where Knoppix 3.3 boots fine. Difference in KNOPPIX is that after the 0. DEFAULT ENTRY line, there's another line about the CDROM being assigned to A: (yes, that's right) and A: reassigned to B: Since this is happening when the Adaptec BIOS is scanning the CD, before the boot code is executed.
just did some testing of the newer livecds: x86 Livecd, Fosdem Edition: does work x86 Livecd, LinuxTag Edition: doesn't work x86 Installcd, 2004.0 Edition: does work (as it is relevant to this bug, hangs later) x86 Installcd, 2004.1 Edition: does work x86 Installcd, 2004.2 Edition: does work As this bug didn't get that much attention over the last months and seems to be solved for the newer discs, I would suggest to close it.
The actual versions of the livecds work for me
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
