Description Charles Christie 2005-11-14 15:46:06 UTC
When you choose to format drives, for the first couple of tries, it says the
device doesn't exist. it eventually succeeds in formatting the drives.
Example: mke2fs (blablabla) can't stat device /dev/hdb1 (yes, my install is on
hdb.) a few tries later it works. Same with reiserfs and everything else.
Then, it gets to mounting and throws out an exception. Funny thing is that the
exception doesn't tell you anything: it says
(something)Exception :
and that's it. I tried changing the mount point, but that didn't do anything.
I have the XPI saved on my flash drive if you want to take a look at it.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Attempt an install using the latest snapshot as of november 14th
2.partitions: /dev/hda1 = fat32 (/windows/C) (defaults)
              /dev/hdb1 = e2fs (/boot) (defaults,noatime)
              /dev/hdb2 = swap
              /dev/hdb3 = reiserfs (/) (defaults,notail)

Actual Results:
"install failed!" so says the installer.

Expected Results:
It should've mounted the hardrives and formated them.

I was running the gtk+ frontend installer in X.

The messages about not being able to stat the device node are normal. I suppose
they should be made a little less scary, but eh. And there was an actual error
message. You just had to scroll down a bit in the window (click and drag) to see it.

Did you run an install (and have it fail) with the version of the installer on
the LiveCD before trying the latest version? If so, that would explain the
problem mounting the partition. The 0.1 didn't clean up very well after itself
when the install failed.

If this isn't the case, please attach /var/log/installer.log from the LiveCD
(right after the failure) and we'll take a look.

Yeah, I tried the liveCD one. But after that I restarted, formatted the hard
drive with reiser in the terminal (I started with gentoo nox because the root
password isn't told to you so I made my own before starting gdm), ran startx,
updated using the instructions to the latest CVS version (which is probably
old by now), saved installerwhatever.xpi onto my flash drive... I'll include
that log thing and my xpi file if it'll help, but I have to do my homework
first. see you later.

Ha! Got it! you guys need to add a scroll bar on the output sections. And the
documentation doesn't work. But, it says that fat32 is unsupported, and that
maybe I meant "vfat." is this correct? you should fix this quickly. I'm sure
it'll confuse other windows users.
Comment 4 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-15 07:46:30 UTC
Ah, now the vfat thing is actually a bug. I don't think anyone has set a
mountpoint for their fat32 partition before, or atleast they haven't told us
about that error when they do. It's fixed in CVS. As for the scrollbar and the
empty Documentation tab, they're both known issues. Thanks for the bug report.

I'm happy I could help! the install is working fine, and when I get home I'll
tell you if anything gets hosed again. I'm at school now, and I can't connect
to my home computer from here anyway. But thanks again! (it was at "emerge
extra packages" when I left my house. a few of the packages failed but I don't
think it was very important. I'll just do emerge -avD world when I get home
and hope it works.)

Moving to Release Media/Installer.
