first, net-dialup/ppp-2.4.3-r9 is very close to ppp-2.4.4b1 since it contains
nearly all upstream fixes (certainly the most important ones).

second, the current stable and testing versions - ppp-2.4.2-r15 and ppp-2.4.3-r9
- do not have bugs related to persistent or on-demand connections.
