Or when we try to run the accelerator encoder we get:

Fatal error: eAccelerator Encoder requires php_zlib extension. in
/var/www/localhost/htdocs/eaccelerator/encoder.php on line 42

Is it possible to put a check in the ebuild?

Fixed in CVS for dev-php4/eaccelerator-0.9.3.

No, it's dead and unmaintained and will be package.masked. ;) We won't be fixing any ebuilds for dev-php/php, you need to switch to dev-lang/php to get support, sorry.
