Description Marijn Schouten (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-13 05:18:31 UTC
With the 2005.1 universal AMD64 livecd, when untarring portage snapshot 20050709,
I get a "no space left on device"-error. This is after I successfully untarred
stage3 there. I checked with "cat /dev/zero > zeros" to see how much space there
was to start with, and it is 459M. After stage3 there is 61M left.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.untar stage3 to /mnt/gentoo
2.untar portage snapshot to /mnt/gentoo
3.

Actual Results:
/mnt/gentoo fills up completely and I get the error(s) "Cannot write: No space
left on device

Expected Results:
installation of portage

I have an MSI RS482M4 ILD motherboard with 1 GB RAM with 64MB shared by my
onboard radeon express.

when there is no space then there is no space, not sure what you expect us to do
about this ...

You didn't ommit the step to prepare your harddisk _and_ mount it to /mnt/gentoo,
did you?
Comment 3 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-13 07:17:58 UTC
Well, this is invalid for one of two reasons:

1) You have a tiny hard drive and ran out of space (unlikely)
2) You missed the step that told you to mount your drive under /mnt/gentoo and
are unpacking the stage and snapshot into the ramdisk created by the CD

In either case, there isn't anything that we can do to resolve the issue
satisfactorily, but in both cases there are things that you can do.
