Description Stephan Sokolow 2005-11-09 16:22:47 UTC
Pingus provides no .desktop file and therefore no menu entry in Xfce or GNOME. (I have not tested other desktop environments)

As such, I have created and attached one. In addition, Pingus provides no icon so I am attaching a suggestion to be sent upstream.

We add desktop support via the make_desktop_entry using upstream-provided icons.
We'll add as we go so please don't carpet bomb bugzilla with stuff like this.
Thanks.

Well then add an entry without an icon (for now). Or some default game icon. It's pretty annoying to install an application/game and not be able to play it. (Of course, there's always the console I know)

No.

The moment we do, somebody will file a bug about how the stupid thing doesn't have an icon. I have faith in your ability to run "pingus" from the command line just as well as your ability to run "emerge pingus" from said command line.

Yes, but since we try to push linux on the Desktop.... or anyhow.

Then all that is needed is a generic game icon.

I emerge the game from the said commandline, on my sisters machine. I don't feel like then creating .desktop files and what not in her 'start menu' just so she can play the game. And no. I don't feel like teaching her about the command line. If she wanted to know it, she would, all she wants to do is USE her computer.

I agree that not installing a desktop entry because there is no icon saves a lot of useless bug reports, but having a generic icon with a menu entry is far more recomendable.

I would recommend pushing the icon upstream and see if they'll accept it. If upstream accepts it, we'll have no problem using it. Even better would be to have the upstream package give a .desktop file, that way everyone benefits.

Anyway, we'll revisit this once pingus upstream has some sort of icon.

Actually, I wasn't even talking about icon's for this project anymore : )

Maybe a formal change requests for default handling of iconless ebuilds should be supplied? Anyway, this is going kinda off-topic.
