Please make sure you have nvidia devices under /dev/nvidia*. I had exactly the same problem and had to recreate them manually.

I just went up to the new xorg-7 and have run into the same problem. All my /dev/nvidia nodes do exist and I did reemerge the nvidia-glx package. Just as a not to the above bug report, nv is the free nvidia driver shipped with xorg and it does not provide GLX extensions/hardware 3D. my Xorg error log has the following: (II) Setting vga for screen 0. Same problem here with. I just movedto xorg-x11-7.0-r1 and reemerged nvidia-glx-1.0.6629-r7 and nvidia-kernel-1.0.6629-r5 cause I need them for my old Geforce2 GTS. With nv everything works but with nvidia I get the same errors. I put -dlloader in my useflags (sry, can't post emerge --info at the moment) as it was suggest in reply to these errors in some forums, but this didn't change anything. I also deleted nodes, recreated them and run eselect opengl nvidia. With xorg-x11-6.8.2 everything worked just fine. Maybe old legacy nvidia drivers don't work with modular xorg?

I was having a severe problem with the earlier version of the nvidia kernel module and glx driver, until after spending most of today analysising what was happening, I found that the last available legacy driver version (7174) doesn't relate to the last released pack. After altering the ebuilds myself, I emerged nvidia-kernel-1.0.7174-r3, and ran a manual ebuild nvidia-glx-1.0.7174-r6, which both compiled cleanly. Ran an `eselect opengl set nvidia` for good measure, ensured that my xorg.conf driver was set to nvidia, crossed my fingers and started X. I get this problem (with xorg 7.0-r1) as well. What bugs me is that the nvidia-glx ebuild creates a "nvidia_drv.o" where it probably should create a .so The USE-Flag "dlloader" is set as per default but "equery uses nvidia-glx" doesn't show it as being used - as opposed to the current ~x86 ebuild (8762)

I have a Toshiba Satellite 5200-801, since my last Gentoo Installation on April 2005 all works fine. Some days ago i do a emerge -p -v --newuse --update --emptytree system. I know that all nvidia greater tah 6629 do hangups on my laptop, so I masked all these. I masked also the new modular xorg-x11, so this update do an update from x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r* to x11-base/xorg-x11-6.8.2-r8. Over the night I run this update and have the same problems with the nvidia-driver. I tried all nvidia-drivers from portage, I had with drivers after 6629 the hangups and all other versions produce the described errors. I also tried a 2.6.17-kernel, does not work. In one Thread I read, udev are broken. The emerge system updated udev from sys-fs/udev-058 to sys-fs/udev-087-r1 I played wit every udev version in portage-tree, nothing worked. My idea is to switch back to udev-058, but I don't have a portage_overlay created before and I can't find a 058-ebuild in CVS.
