Hi! Each time I try to emerge mono-1.1.9.1 or 1.1.9.2 the system freezes completely during compilation. Any ideas or thoughts about it? Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. type 'emerge mono' 2. wait a little bit Actual Results: system freezes completely Expected Results: mono gets compiled and installed Portage 2.0.51.22-r3 (default-linux/x86/2005.1, gcc-3.3.6, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 i686 AMD Sempron(tm) 2200+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 ccache version 2.3 [enabled] dev-lang/python: 2.3.5, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mfpmath=sse -mmmx -msse -m3dnow" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/mozilla/defaults/pref /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/splash /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 -O2 -march=athlon-xp -fomit-frame-pointer -pipe -mfpmath=sse -mmmx -msse -m3dnow" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://distfiles.gentoo.org http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" LANG="de_DE.UTF-8" LC_ALL="de_DE.UTF-8" LINGUAS="de" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/overlays/local" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow 3dnowex X a52 aac acpi alsa apache2 audiofile avi bash-completion bitmap-fonts cdparanoia cdr crypt cscope curl dbus dga dio dvd dvdr dvdread eds emboss encode esd esound exif fam fbcon ffmpeg fortran ftp gb gd gif glut gnome gphoto2 gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 gtkhtml guile hal hbci howl icq imagemagick imap imlib innodb iodbc java jpeg junit kdeenablefinal lcms libg++ libwww mad mime mmx mmxext motif mozilla mp3 mpeg mysql mysqli nas ncurses network nls nntp nocd nptl nptlonly nvidia odbc ogg oggvorbis openal opengl oscar pam pdflib php pic pie png posix python quicktime readline real scanner sdl silverxp slang spell spl sqlite sse ssl svga sysvipc tcltk theora tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts ucs2 udev unicode usb vcd videos vorbis win32codecs wmf x86 xine xml xml2 xmms xv xvid xvmc zlib linguas_de userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LDFLAGS
There's really nothing about compiling mono other than maybe heating the system up a bit that could be directly responsable for a system hang. I suggest you: 1) Run memtest86 to make sure your don't have duff RAM. 2) Remove some of those CFLAGS (though i've seen far worse) 3) Check to make sure you don't have heat issues.
Made a kernel update today and tried to emerge mono again, without problems. Tried to reemerge with the old kernel and got the hang again. So the problem was the kernel.
