When dbus init script starts I get an error:

Cannot setup D_NOTIFY for '/etc/dbus-1/system.d' error 'Invalid argument'

Did you run etc-update after installing dbus?  Also, could you attach the
contents of the system.d directory?

I've had this since I installed this system, and I've run many etc-update since.
The contents of system.d is:

gnome-power-manager.conf
hal.conf
notification-daemon.conf

This now works OK since upgrading to dbus-0.50

bump to .50 fixed according to poster.
