IIRC, this is a result of not having gnome-python-extras installed. Do you have gnome-python-extras installed? Is this gdesklets-core-0.34.3-r1?
I've been able to solve the problem. I just had to run python-updater, I had gnome-python-extras installed. Now gdesklets is working perfectly. So the bug should be closed.

This doesn't really look at all related to gdesklets, but rather probably an x11-libs/vte issue.
