Description Dead Schorsch 2005-10-17 15:32:59 UTC
The gam_server process is started by Gnome 2.12, but it does not come up
properly. /var/log/user.log repeats saying:

I'm also seeing that gam_server / gamin crashes all the time.

In a terminal I started dvdrip and get a lot of these messages:

end from FAM server connection

Comment 3 John N. Laliberte (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-18 11:13:40 UTC
did some quick investigating and will get back later, see this redhat bug:

Comment 4 Dead Schorsch 2005-10-18 11:28:27 UTC
Creating a .gaminrc with content

fsset nfs kernel

as suggested by the RedHat bug report makes the repetitive log-messages
dissappear and gam_server does not change the PID that often any more. I should
add, that my $HOME is imported from a NFS server.

Yet, directory content view for example in Nautilus is not updated until i
explicitely request refresh (using menu or Ctrl-R).
Comment 5 Daniel Gryniewicz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-18 13:10:41 UTC
Just as a data point, a user on IRC had this problem, and fixed it by
re-emerging gamin, gnome-vfs, and nautilus.
Comment 6 Daniel Gryniewicz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-25 10:14:01 UTC
I've added gamin-0.1.6-r1 to fix this issue, masked for now. Could someone with
the problem try that and verify that it fixes it?
Comment 7 Marc Geerlings 2005-10-25 12:45:08 UTC
1.6-r1 seems to work for me! Tried several, mount/umount touch/rm actions, that
surely would have crashed 1.6 without problem. Thanks!
Comment 8 Martin Schlemmer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-25 15:22:39 UTC
In theory this should have been assigned to me. Anyhow, please add the patch to
the redhat bug report so that it can be fixed upstream ...
Comment 9 Mario 2005-10-26 08:46:45 UTC
This new version works for me as well. Tested with amarok, gnome-volume-manager
and nautilus (which usually all killed it or at least spat out errors)
Comment 10 Matthias Langer 2005-10-26 11:47:56 UTC
Seems to work for me too (with gnome-2.10.2 and nautilus-2.10.1-r1):

Another happy patch user.
Before the patch we had crashes hundreds of time a minute!
Comment 12 Daniel Gryniewicz (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-28 07:52:48 UTC
re comment #8:
It came from upstream, and has already been applied to CVS.

I've unmasked the fixed gamin.
