I installed 8.18.6 ati-drivers. X runs fine, KDE loads and runs fine, BUT when I move the mouse OR press ANY key, X (xorg) dies instantly. I had the same behaviour with 8.16.20. The same doesnt happen in 8.14.xx series , wich works fine. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge ati-drivers (ver 8.18.6) 2. 3. Actual Results: X dies while moving the mouse or pressing any key on the keyboard Expected Results: X to keep handling the mouse/keyboard events and not die Portage 2.0.53_rc5 (default-linux/amd64/2005.0, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.13-gentoo-r2 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.13-gentoo-r2 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.12.0_pre9 dev-lang/python: 2.3.4-r1, 2.4.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.13 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r7 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.16.1 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.20 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/grass60/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/env /usr/kde/3.4/share/config /usr/kde/3.4/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/lib/fax /usr/share/config /var/qmail/alias /var/qmail/control /var/spool/fax/etc /var/vpopmail/domains /var/vpopmail/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=k8 -O2 -pipe" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://files.gentoo.gr" LANG="el_GR" LINGUAS="en el" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X aalib alsa apache2 arts atm avi bash-completion bash_completion berkdb bitmap-fonts browserplugin cdda cdr crypt cups curl dvd dvdread emboss encode esd fam ffmpeg font-server foomaticdb fortran gdbm gif glitz glut gnome gpm gtk gtk2 imagemagick imap imlib ipv6 ithreads java jpeg junit kde ldap libcaca libwww lzw lzw-tiff mad maildir mozsvg mp3 mpeg mysql ncurses nls ogg opengl pam pdflib perl png ppds python qt quicktime readline rtc ruby samba scanner sdl smp speex spell ssl subversion svg tcpd threads tiff truetype truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb v4l v4l2 vorbis xine xml xml2 xpm xv xvid xvmc zlib video_cards_radeon linguas_en linguas_el userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, PORTDIR_OVERLAY

I found the solution. The crash is happening ONLY if I edit the xorg.conf And remove all the available resolutions and put only one like the above: "1024x768" If from the glrxconfig line : "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" I remove only the : "1280x1024" and the final line in xorg.conf is: "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" the crash does not happen
the same happens with 8.18.8 but not with the old 8.14.13
the new drivers have resolved the bug... (8.29.6)
