As slamr (slmodem) is broken (gentoo-sources-2.6.13-r3) again, I am tryng to configure the alsa driver, but it seems the module snd-intel8x0m can not detect the modem ("0000:00:07.0 Modem: ALi Corporation SmartLink SmartPCI561 56K Modem" / Subsystem: 10a5:5459) in my desktop computer. In a HP notebook with internal modem ("0000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M / Subsystem: 0e11:0860) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01)") it was detected by snd-intel8x0m and is working OK. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.USE=alsa emerge slmodem 2.configure "/etc/modules.d/alsa" and "/etc/conf.d/slmodem"; run "modules-update" 3./etc/init.d/alsasound start 4.aplay -l Actual Results: After "etc/init.d/alsasound start": Loading ALSA modules ... What does dmesg give you when you try to load snd-intel8x0m? What does happen if you try to start /etc/init.d/slmodem? The latest slamr(I committed it a few hours ago) should work on 2.6.13.
Please also post "lspci -n" output
Found the id's anyway. This modem is unsupported by snd-intel8x0m. I suggest you send a mail to alsa-devel@alsa-project.org CC perex@suse.cz and CC sashakh@gmail.com including "lspci -vvv" and "lspci -n" output and see if anything can be done.

Something like "can't find hw:1", I don't remember. > The latest slamr(I committed it a few hours ago) should work on 2.6.13. I will try it (slmodem-2.9.11-20051009) tonight.

So, there is no support for this PCI modem in snd-intel8x0m.
