Did you forgot using `opengl-update` maybe?
I've gotten the same error. I did run opengl-update, and tried it in both nvidia and xorg-x11. Also noteworthy: I tried re-emerging wxGTK-2.6.1 to see if that would produce the same error, and it did NOT fail to find the GL libs (in other words, ./configure was successful).
Same configure error here with 2.6.2, no problem with 2.6.1. No nvidia drivers here, however. Rerunning 'opengl-update xorg-x11' had no effect. config.log is attached ( I wasn't able to make much sense of it ). emerge info: Portage 2.0.51.22-r3 (default-linux/amd64/2005.1, gcc-3.4.4, glibc-2.3.5-r2, 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.13-gentoo-r3 x86_64 Mobile AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ Gentoo Base System version 1.6.13 dev-lang/python: 2.3.5-r2, 2.4.1-r1 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.12 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.59-r6 sys-devel/automake: 1.4_p6, 1.5, 1.6.3, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.15.92.0.2-r10 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.18-r1 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.11-r2 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=k8 -pipe -O2" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/env /usr/kde/3.5/share/config /usr/kde/3.5/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/lib/X11/xkb /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=k8 -pipe -O2" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoconfig distlocks sandbox sfperms strict" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.chem.wisc.edu/gentoo/ http://gentoo.osuosl.org/" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage /usr/local/media-port" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="amd64 X a52 aac alsa avi berkdb bitmap-fonts cdparanoia cdr crypt curl dv dvd dvdr emboss encode fam ffmpeg flac foomaticdb fortran gif gpm gstreamer gtk gtk2 hal ieee1394 imagemagick imlib ipv6 jpeg kde lm_sensors lzw lzw-tiff mad matroska mikmod mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nptl ogg opengl pam pcmcia pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline sdl ssl tcltk tcpd theora tiff truetype-fonts type1-fonts usb userlocales vcd vorbis wifi xine xinerama xml2 xpm xv xvid zlib userland_GNU kernel_linux elibc_glibc" Unset: ASFLAGS, CTARGET, LANG, LC_ALL, LDFLAGS, LINGUAS, MAKEOPTS

Adding "=x11-libs/wxGTK-2.6.2 -opengl" to /etc/portage/package.use did result in a successful emerge. That's cool for me for now but it would be nice to have opengl enabled in the future in case a package does come along that requires it.

A workaround that works for me is to add the line =x11-libs/wxGTK-2.6.2 -opengl to the /etc/portage/package.use file. It will disable opengl support in this wxGTK version.
Thank you mate, that did it. :)
I guess i talked too soon... it didnt work actually... I did an emerge --sync before trying to emerge it again checking for -lGL... no checking for -lMesaGL... no configure: error: OpenGL libraries not available !!! ERROR: x11-libs/wxGTK-2.6.2 failed. !!! Function subconfigure, Line 83, Exitcode 1 !!! ./configure failed !!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, NOT this status message.
I'm seeing this on amd64 as well. the "-opengl" USE flag is all well and good, but I'm rather interested in the why, more than the workaround. Rob, talk to me on irc if there's any realtime type of info I can provide to help you locate the causes of this bug.
Seemant, I'm trying to get ahold of you on irc. In the meantime, it seems the culprit is in wxlib.eclass. If you remove this line it works, but I'm testing it on x86 and other wxGTK versions to make sure it breaks nothing else: --host=${CHOST} \ For the one person not on amd64 (Anatoly) please make sure you have a working opengl (run opengl-update). If that doesn't work, please open another bug and attach your config.log.
Fixed wxlib.eclass in CVS
