To display the current configuration and a list of currently  running  
automount daemons the command is:  
/etc/autofs/init.d/autofs stats 
not: 
/etc/autofs/init.d/autofs status

When you have a problem with the parameter you should also request to change
"/etc/autofs/init.d/autofs" to "/etc/init.d/autofs".
