Description Marcelo Goes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-03 11:40:18 UTC
Hello there,

links2 is actually a compatibility link to links (ls -l /usr/bin/links2 if you
have www-client/links installed) and it would probably be nice to update
documentation to reflect this.

I did a grep of the tree and apparently a quick sed s:links2:links:g should fix
all documents.

Thanks,
Marcelo

Is this true for all installation CDs we have? I remember using links2 in the
handbook instead of links because some architecture didn't have links while they
all had links2 (either the binary or as a symlink to links).
Comment 2 Marcelo Goes (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-04 13:29:03 UTC
I haven't checked, but all should either have links+links2 symlink and/or lynx.
Before 2005.1's launch, 2.1_pre15 was stable on all arches but MIPS and right
now 2.1_pre17 is stable on all arches but MIPS.

See why we really need a complete `ls -lR` of all files on released media.
The listings we have do not contain any listing of the LiveCD squashed filesystem.
For instance, install-amd64-minimal-2005.1.iso.CONTENTS shows only a handful of
lines, now what's in /livecd.squashfs ?

Both alpha & ppc64 have
/zisofs/usr/bin/links

Boxes I have:
x86, hppa, sparc and amd64 have /usr/bin/links (and a links2 symlink)

I downloaded the ppc minimal and it also has /usr/bin/links

MIPS: no idea

If you can't wait until 2006.0, and after the mips guys have confirmed
/usr/bin/links exists, the following files could be changed:

hb-install-amd64-medium.xml
hb-install-hppa-medium.xml
hb-install-ppc64-medium.xml
hb-install-ppc-medium.xml
hb-install-sparc-medium.xml
hb-install-stage.xml
hb-install-x86-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-amd64-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-hppa-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-ppc64-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-ppc-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-sparc-medium.xml
2005.1/hb-install-stage.xml
2005.1/hb-install-x86-medium.xml

Currently, no mips install media (whether it be netboot or our *extremely*
pre-alpha experimental eat-your-dog livecds) even uses links, or any browser for
that matter. Therefore, you can probably ignore us until such time as this changes.
Comment 5 Xavier Neys (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-10-05 08:17:16 UTC
Thanks.

Now, we can remove the bit about lynx and use links in the common part
(hb-install-stage.xml)

I can wait :-)

In CVS. Note that of all the hb-install-$arch-medium docs in handbook/draft.2006.0, only the mips doc needed no changes, as it does not/will not include links. Thanks for reporting.
