I found the program "dpms" available at
http://www.srcf.ucam.org/~mjg59/laptops/dpms_0.1-1.tar.gz
very useful for my inspiron 6000, it allows to turn the screen back on (wether
at a text console or running X Window) when the lid is opened (needs to be added
to the acpi scripts on a lid open event)

i have make an ebuild for dpms you can find it over there:

helpful

No progress here for one year, closing WONTFIX.

Feel free to reopen with an ebuild (no, we don't want links to external tarballs).
