You'll need to post more of the ouput. The actual error is ocurring earlier 
than that. Post approx. the last 50-100 lines of the output.

thanks for pointing that out, i wouldn't have thought of that otherwise... seems
to be a problem with my /etc/security/limits.conf being too restrictive... ~4000
lines before the end of emerge hides this nasty little error:

extra-module.mk:16: extra-module.mk: Too many open files

i'll try to fix it and report if it helped. thanks a lot.

ok, after several tries (editing /etc/security/limits.conf didn't help for some
reason) i set higher values with ulimit directly and everything went fine.
