You can use -march=k8 cflag for better optimization for all your system, it is a safe cflag :)
I can't reproduce this with 2.2.11 on x86, with or without USE="gnome". Additionally, the only references I can find seem to be old, and on x86-64. Can you try upgrading to 2.4.1, and see if the problem is resolved? To do that, you'll need to: USE="~amd64" emerge abiword
