While pretending to update the dependencies of the I found that it keep wanting to emerge the hardly light mozilla web browser from a yelp 2.10 dependency, which is part of the gnome-light metapackage. In an earlier searched bug I found that yelp was light enough so it gained itself a place in gnome-light, but now with dependencies like mozilla, I don't think it's the case anymore. Can gnome-light keep its lightness way with things like that? Epiphany and Evolution were two things that kept me out of the full Gnome pack, yelp is close to the third place now. Is yelp really needed in a light package? Suggestions: a. Complete removal of yelp from gnome-light b. Create a local USE flag in gnome-light to handle yelp c. Create a USE flag in yelp to handle mozilla, if possible (I doubt it)

Create a USE flag in yelp to handle mozilla, if possible (I doubt it) Actually the latter has been done already, just activate the local "firefox" USE flag, and it will build using mozilla-firefox instead. On the other hand, I'd prefer to have a local use flag for yelp. Currently, I put a modified gnome-light ebuild in my overlay so that it just won't build yelp, but I think that should be an option on the gnome-light package as well. The gnome-terminal dependency should also be removed or USE-flag'd IMO.
I don't agree with this bug. I feel yelp is important enough for any gnome metabuild. If yelp isn't installed, there is no way for users to view documentation, and the help->contents option of every gnome app is just plain broken. I also don't agree with adding new local use flag for every single feature, especially in a metabuild. If you really need to customize your gnome install that much, then you should use a custom ebuild or just install the packages you want to use.

Just file me as one more person that disagrees with you on that issue, while my poor little 64MB XBox compiles firefox, just to give me a help menu that I'll never ever use.
what about a gnome-core meta ebuild then, that would only pull libs needed to build gnome apps. I'm thinking of hal, dbus, libgnome*, libbonobo*. The rest would be pulled by individual app the user would select. With such an ebuild, we could even remove gnome-light so that the user has to decide what he really wants. Any comments ?
No. We (the gnome herd) don't have time to test gnome-light as it is, there's no way we could test yet another meta. If you want a different set of packages, copy gnome-light into an overlay and modify it to suit yourself. BTW, everything needed by an app should be pulled in by that app. That includes all the things you mentioned. So, you gain nothing, I think, by having that gnome-core meta.
I think this bug got closed a little prematurely. I think there already exists a useflag. Either minimal or doc useflags could be used for this just fine. The reason that normal users need their help menu's is moot. Users (that get a gentoo install) either get a full blown gnome anyhow, if their admin decides on gnome-light then he should add the custom ebuild/yelp for this specific need. Most gnome-light users I recon are gentoo users that want a sleek and light system. Please both parties by using the minimal/doc flag for yelp.
