It has numerous problems: 1. vmware-config.pl does not run unless a stanza in it is commented out. 2. The install tarball is not available at any Gentoo mirror; currently, it has to be downloaded directly from VMware. This is ok, but the ebuild does not set the restricted fetch flag. 3. Most importantly, version 5.5 is a beta build with debugging enabled (and cannot be disabled). This tremendously slows down virtual machines running under VMware workstation, to the point where I can see the screen redraw happening nearly on a line-on-line basis on a 3 GHz PC. #3 is the main reason why this is unsuitable for x86 use. Should be marked ~x86, while the first two items are ebuild issues that can be better resolved through further testing in the ~x86 track. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
It isn't. It's hard masked.
$ grep -C1 vmware /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask # This is beta code and is only of interest for testers =app-emulation/vmware-workstation-5.5.0.16325
http://www.gentoo.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/app-emulation/vmware-workstation/vmware-workstation-5.5.0.16325.ebuild?rev=1.1&view=markup By parts: 1- You fail to explain the problem. It is working for alot of persons. 2- I have no idea where you fail to see the nofetch 3- It is beta, as has been pointed out it is hardmasked. And it actually is not that slow, maybe you have other problems on your system. I am abble to run fedora core 4 as a guest os and get around 400 fps in glxgers. There is one issue that should be fixed, it is the fact that the keywords are x86 and amd64. Even in the circunstance where a package is hardmasked it should be ~x86 and ~amd64. Next time Dan please report your bugs better.
