Description Andrew Griffin 2005-09-21 14:37:10 UTC
I'm trying to install Gentoo from the 2005.1 livecd iso on an old 486 laptop. It
boots up fine and recognises all the hardware, including the network driver and
dhcp settings. However if I ping a web site the machine hangs until I pop out
the pcmcia network card.

I've had to install SuSE linux for now, this seems to work ok..

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from 2005.1 universal iso disk
2. check network config using ifconfig
3. ping www.yahoo.com

Actual Results:
Machine hangs, can't break out of ping. Removing network card releases machine.
Putting back in freezes machine.

Expected Results:
reply from www.yahoo.com

Output from lspci immediatly after boot up.

There's two realtek drivers... try rmmod 8139too and modprobe 8139cp and see if
it works.

I tried that but modprobe reported that the driver was incompatible with the
device and to try the 8139too driver instead. The SuSE install used the 8139too
driver with no problems.

After many hours rebuilding kernels etc.... I managed to get it working by
setting the kernel boot parameter pci=biosirq

Many thanks for all those who spent time on this.
