There are no plans to include the release candidates for Wesnoth in portage. 
Feel free to add those to your local overlay.  When version 1 is released, it
will be added to portage.

The 0.9.x releases were onsidered as betas, why the stable almost ready testing
 versions are not included? And since the game server has the latest version
everyone will have to hack an ebuild at home...

What bothers me is that searching for "wesnoth" in bugzilla didn't show
anything... in any of the three search boxes.

playing multiplayer won't work unless you have the newest verion (which is
currently the release-candidate)
