while trying to emerge bcrypt 1.1 I ran into the following problem

/bin/echo on a Darwin system is BSDish echo, so doesn't understand -e argument.  Hacked around this stupid Debianism by using the echo found in path.  Next to that, hacking out the -static for Darwin did the trick.
