This is what I recieve when pinging a bluetooth device:

I think this is just a bug in the output, all previous steps in
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/bluetooth-guide.xml succeeded.

what version of bluez-utils were you using?

These are the packages that I would merge, in reverse order:
