Oh, just a minute... it works fine as root but not as user.  I had to change 
line 44 of /usr/share/games/abuse/abuse.lsp by removing BOSS_ANT; then it works 
for users.   
 
Because it works for root but not users I suspected permissions.  I changed 
group ownership of /usr/share/games/abuse to games recursively but that didn't 
alter anything.

thats a different issue, one we (the games -devs) are addressing
