ee has "=sys-libs/db-1*" in DEPENDS, though nothing in its code actually uses db. Though ee won't build without having "<=sys-libs/db-2", this is simply because ee depends on ">=gnome-base/gnome-libs-1.4.1.2-r1", and this depends on "<=sys-libs/db-2". This dependency is therefore added recursively, but not directly a requirement for ee itself.
It may indirectly pull it in, but it is necessary for it to compile, since it links directly to db1, so I'd rather leave it in for now.
