Hello, As most of you probably already know, there has been a lot of breakage with rrdtool 1.0.x and 1.2.x. Most applications only support one version of rrdtool. Since there is quite a lot of applications that depend on rrdtool, I think it is about time that we SLOTted it. I am not sure as to what is the best sane manner of doing it, but we can't put this away forever. Marcelo
i think trying to SLOT this package is more trouble than it's worth
I disagree (though I am not 100% sure of all the implications of slotting in this case) as I think we are going to have to SLOT rrdtool as there are a LOT (read most) packages that are breaking with the newer 1.2 branch.
Perhaps spanky can provide reasons for it being a PITA :)
as soon as someone tries to SLOT it i'm sure they'll quickly figure out why this is a pita if a majority of apps break with 1.2.x, then why not p.mask it until those packages can be sorted out ?
The problem with p.masking 1.2 branch is as follows: * on the one hand the packages that rely on 1.0 are very unlikely to be updated, in particular the ones that I maintain, things like FlowScan and a LOT of other older netmon type utils were stopped actively being updated years ago because they do their job (pretty much) perfectly. I would be interested in input from others but I strongly suspect that a lot of packages would fall into this category, or at least the ones that have problems with 1.2. * 1.2 brings functionality that some applications are already taking advantage of (eg cacti). If any of those packages become / are stable then we have further issues with continuing to mask 1.2.
SpanKY, I agree this is really a lot of trouble (reason why I opened this bug). However, for the reasons Benjamin explained, things as they as are at the moment create a problem for users and maintainers. We have to bounce between versions of rrdtool and it doesn't look like old tools are getting updated to use rrdtool 1.2.x. Between getting ourselves dirty and porting apps to rrdtool 1.2.x and SLOTing rrdtool, I like the second option better.
Eh, nothing depends on =net-analyzer/rrdtool-1.0* any more. WONTFIX.
