From the ebuild: basemap is an extension to the Python plotting library matplotlib. It can be used to plot many types of data onto a variety of map projections, with optional continental and political boundaries. Its a modified version of the dev-python/matplotlib ebuild, I just replaced the names and updated the dependancies list. The download location is now: mirror://sourceforge/matplotlib/${P}.tar.gz Because basemap is part of the matplotlib project.

Please fix the following and reopen: * http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/docs/mw-faq/toolong.txt * http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/docs/mw-faq/keywords.txt (~ppc?) * http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/docs/mw-faq/quoting.txt
Uploading improved version of the ebuild with required changes. Also I've removed the src_open function as suggested by another tip, as all it did was unpack/cd.

Oops, one more thing I should've noticed the first time: * http://dev.gentoo.org/~ciaranm/docs/mw-faq/header.txt Please reopen with an updated ebuild.
Ok, I'm reopening this report again and uploading the ebuild with a $Header: $ line added.

I suggest putting it in the sci-libs directory? sci-geosciences is also right, but that directory has applications and basemap is purely a library. sci-libs already has 'proj', a C-library with similar functions that basemap uses, and the 'scipy' Python maths library.
Now in basemap-0.9.4 in gentooscience.org overlay. I also put basemap-data. Add it with layman -a science, report bugs here.
now in main tree. thanks.
